Woman’s Face
2017, Oil on Canvas, 48″ X 48″
I painted this from a photograph of random woman on the streets of Chicago. I was exploring the idea of taking a person in the background and promoting them to the main subject. Literally, the image is larger than life. Someone was having a private moment in public. I transferred that moment to the public space. The feeling of anonymity and is a feeling we believe we have every day. The subject of the relationship of the private and the public is something that interests me. The same tension can be in in artist such as Edward Hopper, one of my favorite artists.
Painted in layers using a pallet knives and brushes, the Surface is the result of combining thick paint layers and thin layers of glazes. I love the drips on this painting. The canvas has an organic feel as it represents the flesh of a person, but maintains its own physical attributes.
